Montreal, Leclerc case
Charles Leclerc and Ferrari will appear in the stewards’ room after FP2 in Montreal. The Monegasque was in fact the only driver to take to the track with intermediate tires before the session was declared wet by race management.
According to article 30.5 l) of the sporting regulations, a driver can use an intermediate or full wet tire only after the race director declares the session wet. While the drivers already “lined up” to start the session were waiting for the green light in the pit lane and had already mounted the slicks, Leclerc waited and actually took to the track with the intermediates before the Race Director Niels Wittich declared the session wet: however, the rain started falling again on the Montreal track at least 15 minutes before FP2, and at 11pm Italian time (start time of the session) the car was ungovernable with dry tyres.
After the first lap of the track, Leclerc was hastily called back by Bryan Bozzi: “We need to get back to the pits“, these are the words of his new race engineer; a very categorical message, to the point that the Monegasque responded if he had done something wrong in the procedure.
The FP1 session in Montreal had already been heavily affected by the rain: only towards the end did some drivers find time and space for a fast lap, and it is certainly not the ideal approach for the rest of the weekend.
