Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that he hopes to see French warplanes in the skies of Ukraine.
Zelensky’s comments came shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris intends to supply Kiev with Mirage (2000-5) fighter jets.
Zelensky expressed several times his disappointment about how long it takes Western allies to make important decisions regarding military support for Ukraine in its current crisis.
Zelensky told French representatives, “I am confident that the skies of Ukraine will one day see the same planes that we saw in the skies of Normandy yesterday,” referring to the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day in Normandy yesterday, Thursday.
Zelensky added, “Your exceptional fighter planes under the command of Ukrainian pilots will prove that Europe is stronger than anyone who dares to threaten it.”
The Mirage (2000-5) is a single-engine multi-role fighter. France aims to replace its current fleet of Mirage aircraft with Rafale aircraft by 2030, but it also hopes to persuade other countries that own Mirage aircraft to supply them to Ukraine.
