In the UK, a stuffed animal of the famous carp was put up for auction for £40,000.
A stuffed carp nicknamed Clarissa, which was caught 72 years ago, will be sold in the UK. About it writes Hereford Times.
The famous fish was caught on September 12, 1952 by British fisherman and writer Richard Walker. Clarissa’s weight was almost 20 kilograms. The fish became famous for being six kilograms heavier than the previous record carp caught in the UK. Now Clarissa has been put up for auction and they intend to fetch from 35 to 40 thousand pounds sterling (from 3.9 to 4.5 million rubles) for her.
In the middle of the 20th century, Walker was perhaps the only person who believed that carp heavier than 18 kilograms could be caught in the country. Professional fishermen considered the writer a dreamer, and articles ridiculing him appeared in specialized magazines. However, in September 1952, Walker still caught a record carp, which amazed even the biologists of the London Zoo, who at first called him a hoaxer. Today, Clarissa’s capture is considered to be the beginning of modern competitive fishing.

Walker’s record stood for 28 years. Only in 1980, a carp weighing 23.3 kilograms was caught. Moreover, he was caught in the same pond near the town of Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, as Clarissa. The legendary fish itself lived in the aquarium of the London Zoo until 1972, and then it was stuffed.
The auction will take place on June 24-25 in Coventry. “This is a unique opportunity to acquire what is probably the most significant specimen of carp in existence,” said a spokesman for the auction house.
Earlier it was reported that a US resident caught a huge paddlefish and broke two records. The lucky catch weighed more than 74 kilograms.
