We are in June and that means that one of the most loved and anticipated events for video game lovers is coming: the Summer Game Festival. Here several companies meet to share their news with the entire world. From previews and release dates for games that were announced long ago, to revelations of experiences that will arrive in the future.
While each of these events has been exciting since their inception, they also have a little problem. Sometimes they show trailers for games that are still several years away and we think that should stop.
Why Summer Game Fest shouldn’t show games too far away
Even if this is how the industry works, the Summer Game Fest should fall into it
We know that this is how the video game business usually works. They announce a title well in advance to generate excitement among the public. The Summer Game Fest is simply an ideal place to do it. However, it is quite strange that they often announce games so far in advance. We even understand if they will come out in the next couple of years because the wait might not be that long. But more than three years later?
However, we have already seen many times that they announce games with trailers made of pure CGI, without any gameplay. They simply present their characters, some indications of their history and consider themselves well served. Perhaps the worst are the ones that right at the end include a message that instead of presenting a release window they simply tell us ‘now in development’,
With the long years of development in video games, we wonder if it is really worth all the anticipation. Don’t they run the risk of people forgetting about them as time goes by? Also in the past we have been excited by games that were either canceled or simply remain in development limbo without a near release window. Not to mention those that were announced with great fanfare only to arrive several years later only to cause disappointment to those who were waiting for them.
Of course, it’s not just Summer Game Fest that’s guilty of this, several other gaming events do the same. But perhaps Geoff Keighley and the rest of the organizers should be more selective with what they show. So it would even be more exciting to see games that are already very close instead of ones that are several years away.
In addition to avoiding distant ones, they should strive to show playability
A little related to the fact that we don’t want to see games so far away at the Summer Game Fest also has to do with their gameplay. Well, as we mentioned, most of these advances do not show it. In recent years we have found several unpleasant surprises of games that promised the sky and the stars only to arrive with very bad or almost non-existent gameplay.
This in turn has already made players a little more cautious about what they are going to buy. They often take the lack of gameplay trailers before the premiere as a red flag. So the Summer Game Fest should also strive to give us samples of how the titles presented there will be played, This way players would also get a better idea of what they will be getting into once it is released and they have it in their hands.
Of course, unfortunately there are also examples of gameplay that is completely false and are only videos. We are seeing them Anthem and Watch Dogs. There the organizers should also be more careful because honestly there they become participants in a deception. But we hope that the studios have also learned their lesson and don’t do things like this again.
As users we must also control our desires with the Summer Game Fest
Finally, as users we must also be a little more measured with our expectations for the Summer Game Fest, since surely the constant comments on networks asking for the impossible make them want to surprise with the best even if it is still a long way away. In fact, there are already discussions that this year’s event might not have as many big announcements as we expect, but that doesn’t mean it should be considered a bad event.
If they simply focus on what is already close enough to us, it is enough to get us excited. Since in other years they focus on what will come soon and so on. Why do I want to see a CGI trailer for a game in 2024 that I won’t see until 2027 or later?
So please Geoff and companies participating in Summer Game Fest, Don’t get us excited anymore about what’s coming in 5 years, bring out your best weapons to catch us for what we still have left of 2024 and we still accept a little of the beginning of 2025. Or do you like to see trailers and trailers and CGI trailers with no release date in sight?
