Several Dutch parties, including right-wing ones, reported that their official websites were inaccessible this Thursday (6) after being the target of cyber attacks, coinciding with the day that the Netherlands votes to elect its representatives in the European Parliament, the which limited access to information about candidates and their proposals.
The Christian Democratic party CDA reported that its website was temporarily inaccessible due to “a strong DDoS attack”, a distributed denial of service attack.
“On election day, we consider this an attack on free and democratic elections. We have reported him to the relevant authorities,” the CDA said in a tweet.
The website of the Party for Freedom (PVV), owned by right-wing Geert Wilders, was also out of service, as was that of the Forum for Democracy (FvD), whose leader, Thierry Baudet, questioned Russia’s involvement in the attacks. The team is working overtime to repel the attack”, highlighted the politician.
A group of pro-Russian hackers known as Hacknet has distributed a message on the Telegram network in which it claims to be behind several cyber attacks on Dutch political parties, including the CDA, the PVV and the FvD, but also the Calvinist party SGP, under the message: “We will continue attacks on the websites of the Netherlands and its parties”.
DDos attacks aim to overload computer servers so that they cannot handle normal internet traffic and therefore remain inaccessible. This is a problem for Dutch voters who want to obtain information about European Parliament candidates and their positions on issues of interest.
The Netherlands and Estonia began European elections today, which will be held by the 27 member countries of the European Union (EU) between this Thursday and next Sunday.
Voting centers in the Netherlands will remain open until 9pm (local time, 4pm Brasília) and the Dutch will elect 31 of the 751 representatives of the European Parliament.
The latest polls place the right-wing party PVV, led by Geert Wilders, at the top of voting intentions, with some of them showing a tie with the left-wing list formed by the Greens and Social Democrats (GL-PvdA), headed by the former Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans. Both would obtain eight seats each if the predictions come true. (With EFE Agency)
