The federal government will appeal the decision of the Federal Court of the 4th Region in Porto Alegre that suspended the auction for the import of 300 thousand tons of rice that was scheduled for this Thursday, 6th, at 9am. In a note, the press office of the National Supply Company (Conab) informed the Broadcast Agro that the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) is working on the appropriate measures with the legal department of the public company.
The court’s decision to suspend the auction met the request of federal deputies Marcel van Hattem (Novo-RS) and federal deputy Lucas Redecker (PSDB-RS), and state deputy Felipe Camozzato (Novo-RS). For judge Bruno Risch, scheduling the auction is premature, “in view of the lack of proof that the national rice market will suffer the negative impact expected by the federal government” due to the floods in Rio Grande do Sul.
The public purchase of rice imported and processed by the Executive became a struggle between the productive sector and the federal government. The Ministry of Agriculture and the National Supply Company (Conab) claim that the measure aims to curb the speculative increase in cereal prices in the country, following the losses recorded in crops in Rio Grande do Sul as a measure to face the economic consequences of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul .
In the event scheduled for tomorrow, Conab would purchase the first batches of the product at a maximum of R$5 per kilo. According to the notice, type 1, long, fine rice would be purchased in 5 kg packages, packaged in the country of origin with the federal government logo and sold to the final consumer with a fixed price of R$4 per kilo, R$20 each package of 5 kilos. The product would be distributed to 21 states in the country and the Federal District. The public company was authorized to spend R$2.53 billion on the operation.
Agribusiness entities argue that there is no risk of shortages and no need to resort to public purchases to rebalance the market. The sector also filed a lawsuit in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) against the import of 1 million tons of rice.
