The Parliament of Slovenia, a member country of the European Union and NATO, approved this Tuesday a decree that recognizes Palestine as a Stateafter rejecting an opposition motion that proposed postponing the vote for thirty days.
Slovenia thus joins Spain, Ireland and Norway, which on May 28 recognized Palestine, provoking indignation in Israel.
The proposal was approved by 52 of the 90 parliamentarians, without the participation of the opposition, which boycotted the session. The conservative and opposition SDS party, led by former Prime Minister Janez Jansa, did not participate in the vote in the Chamber, considering that the coalition violated parliamentary regulations, while the deputies of the also conservative NSi abstained.
Furthermore, the opposition considers that recognition of Palestine comes at the wrong time and could be interpreted as rewarding terrorism.
With this Tuesday’s decision, Slovenia recognizes Palestine with the 1967 borders or with which the parties involved agree in a future peace agreement.

Besides, believes that recognition of Palestine will increase international pressure on Israel and the radical Islamist terrorist group Hamas to agree to a ceasefire lasting and the release of the more than one hundred Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.
