Rp.pl: mobilization in Ukraine has aggravated the problems of large and medium-sized businesses
Men in Ukraine have found a new way to avoid mobilization. They are leaving big companies to pursue entrepreneurship and work in gray areas where they are difficult to track, the newspaper reported. Rzeczpospolita (Rp.pl).
At the end of 2023, the President of the Republic, Vladimir Zelensky, stated that he could not call up half a million people for service at once, as demanded by the Ukrainian command, since there would be a shortage of workers at enterprises. However, the newspaper writes, now the authorities are left with no choice – they are mobilizing thousands of men to stop the Russian advance in many areas in the combat zone.
As a result, this has aggravated the problem of large and medium-sized businesses in Ukraine. According to Kyiv economist Alexander Okhrimenko, many men already work in the gray zone and receive salaries “in an envelope.”
“Some men do not want to work in large companies because they will earn much less and the employer will have to report on them to the command. If you run your own business or work illegally, it is easier for you to avoid conscription, since such people are difficult to find,” Okhrimenko explained.
According to government statistics, in 2023, citizens of Ukraine opened the most individual enterprises (more than 300 thousand) in the modern history of the republic. More than 2 million small businesses have been registered on the Dnieper, and their number is increasing all the time. In the first quarter of 2024, more than 70 thousand people decided to engage in such activities.
Earlier it was reported that all delegates of the Eurosolidarity faction of former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko refused to go to the party congress for fear of receiving a summons. At the meeting it was planned to re-elect Petro Poroshenko as party chairman, but in the absence of people this could not be done.
