The Sharjah Prevention and Safety Authority has identified seven measures to protect children from drowning accidents, especially with the advent of summer and many families resorting to swimming pools and beaches for recreation.
The authority stressed the need to follow a set of prevention measures, which are: appointing an adult to follow children while swimming, training children to swim from a young age, learning how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ensuring that safety means are in place in the pool, and verifying that the pool is covered and surrounded by a fence. The pool area should be free of any tools that might cause slipping or tripping, and children who cannot swim must wear a drowning prevention vest.
For its part, the General Administration of Civil Defense in Ajman, quoting the General Command of Civil Defense, reported that there are five causes of drowning related to non-compliance with prevention and safety requirements in swimming places, which are neglecting children and not following them, staying away from the beach while swimming, and not knowing first aid. Swimming in dangerous areas, and delay in notifying swimming lifeguards or emergency numbers.
She stated that there are five ways to prevent children from drowning, including not allowing children to swim immediately after eating, and not allowing parents to be distracted by their children while swimming. It called for ensuring the presence of life jackets and swimming equipment, while calling on the administration to call for help from those in the place or the swimming lifeguard, and to ensure that a swimming vest is worn.
