The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, swore in this Monday (3) Guillermo Francos as his government’s new chief of staff, a key position with strong political weight and responsible for budget execution.
Milei swore in Francos in a brief ceremony at Casa Rosada, the headquarters of the Argentine Executive.
Francos, who was Minister of the Interior, replaces Nicolás Posse, one of the architects of the libertarian political project who arrived at Casa Rosada in December last year.
Posse, who had a very low public profile, stepped down as chief of staff on May 27 due to “differences in criteria and expectations regarding the government’s progress and the tasks entrusted to it”, as the government itself announced at the time.
The departure occurred after the government’s failure in its announced attempt to sign a “pact” on May 25 with the provincial governors – all from opposition parties – on a series of political and economic principles, which in the end did not materialize because the signature was conditional on the approval of the so-called “basic law” in Parliament, where the governing party is in the minority.
The ambitious reform bill, mainly economic, promoted by Milei has been discussed in Parliament since December, after a series of back and forth, last week it was approved in committees and will soon be debated in the Senate.
The key to obtaining this endorsement was the negotiation that Francos, already appointed as chief of staff, carried out with sectors of the opposition.
In an unprecedented measure, there will no longer be a Ministry of the Interior, as the functions of this department will be absorbed by the chief of staff.
Thus, Francos maintains his role as “political shield” while carrying out the constitutional functions of the head of cabinet, including the coordination of ministers, the exercise of general administration of the country and the execution of the budget. (With EFE Agency)
