In the month of May 2024, The car market Italian has suffered a contraction of 6.6% compared to the previous year, mainly due to the reduction of two working days and the prolonged wait for i new incentives. These state bonuses were introduced on May 25thwhile the activation of Ecobonus platform where dealers upload new contracts took place on 3 June at 10:00 am.
How many cars were sold May 2024
In May 2024, they were registered in Italy 139,581 carsrecording a decrease of 6.6% compared to May 2023. In the first five months of the year, total registrations were 726.311highlighting one growth of 3.4% compared to the same period in 2023, but scoring a drop of 20.3% compared to 2019, pre-Covid.
New car registrations are expected to increase, especially in the month of Junepushed by new incentives. In fact, on the first day of opening of the Ecobonus platform, the 240 million fund earmarked for electric cars was exhaustedfalling within the 0-20 g/km of CO2 range.
Best-selling cars May 2024
The ranking of the best-selling cars in May 2024 sees in first place the Fiat Panda with 8,806 registrations, followed by Citroen C3 (4,197) and by the older generation of Lancia Ypsilon (3,824).

Sales of diesel, petrol, LPG, hybrid and electric cars
In May, petrol engine cars and hybrids recorded consistent growth. Specifically the gas they gained 4.1 points, reaching the 32.2% share in the month and 31.3% cumulatively, with an increase of 3.6 percentage points.
On the contrary, the diesel suffered a loss of more than 31% in volume, falling 5.1 points per 14.4% share in the month and 14.9% in the first five months, a decrease of 4.7 percentage points. The LPG it lost a third of registrations, closing May at 6.4% and the first five months at 8.6%. The methane it represented 0.1% of the market in the month and 0.2% cumulatively.
The hybrid cars they gained 5.4 points in the month, exceeding the 40.0% share (40.1% in the cumulative), with the11.3% for the “full” hybrids and the 28.8% for “mild” hybrids. The DRINK cars they lost half a point, stopping at 3.6% share (at 2.9% in the first five months), while the PHEV they retreated by 1.3 points compared to a year ago, reaching 3.3% (3.2% in the first five months).
Who sold the most in May
Among the car groups in May Stellantis has registered 42,509 cars registered, 14.2% less than the previous year. All brands, except Citroën, suffered a decline: Alfa Romeo saw a decline of 25.3%, DS of 53.5%, Fiat of 11.8%, Jeep of 4.7%, Lancia of 18.6%, Maserati of 38.9%, Opel by 6.2%, and Peugeot by 38.5%. Citroën alone recorded an increase of 42.5% with 5,693 cars.
The Volkswagen group recorded growth of 4.7% with a total of 24,546 registrations. Audi gained 5.9%, Cupra 2.5%, Lamborghini 14.3%, Seat 7%, Skoda 6.1%, and Volkswagen 3.6%. The Renault groupwith 12,900 registrations, suffered a decrease of 12.3%, with Dacia down 40.8% and the Renault brand up 20.6%.
Toyota instead he saw a 2.8% increase with 11,599 registrations, while Lexus recorded a decrease of 27.2%. BMW recorded growth of 3.2% with 7,536 total registrations, BMW gained 21.2%, while Mini lost 44.7%. Among the German brands too Mercedes-Benz recorded an increase of 8% with 5,021 registrations, thanks to the 11.8% increase of the Mercedes-Benz brand, while Smart suffered a decrease of 31.4%.
Continuing with the analysis of brand sales, Ford suffered a decrease of 25.1% with 6,290 registrations, while Hyundai increased by 9.9% with 4,783 registrations and Kia it fell by 6% with 4,497 registrations. Among the Japanese brands, Nissan recorded an increase of 36.2%, Suzuki a decrease of 34.3%, Mazda an increase of 1.5%, Honda growth of 9.1%, Mitsubishi an increase of 884.5%, e Subaru a decrease of 24.2%.
Volvo recorded a decrease of 18.5% with 1,705 registrations, while the group Jaguar Land Rover rose 6.2%, with Jaguar down 67.1% and Land Rover up 25.6%. Tesla recorded a decrease of 27.4%, with 1,073 registrations. There Ferrari saw a decrease of 3.2% and Porsche a growth of 4.7%. Finally the DR group suffered a decrease of 31.4%, while MG recorded an increase of 22.3% and Lynk & Co a decrease of 67.1%.
