Earlier this year Panic, the company behind the Playdatethe peculiar portable console with hand crank, has revealed the theft of a load containing over a thousand units of this device, worth approximately $400,000. Well, months later the stolen goods were found, apparently abandoned on a sidewalk in Las Vegas, next to a restaurant, as if it were simple garbage.
This curious epilogue was revealed by the company with a post on X, complete with images that reveal how fortunately most of the cargo is intact. In short, all’s well that ends well.
“Did you hear the story about how FedEx mistakenly delivered a shipment of $400,000 worth of Playdates to a construction site near our warehouse? And then someone just… stole them? Yes, seriously. Well, guess what was hastily dumped at a random restaurant this morning? Welcome back stolen Playdates!”, reads Panic’s post.
A limited edition of the stolen Playdates?
More details on this curious story will be revealed by Panic in the future via a dedicated podcast. In the meantime, it seems that most of the Playdates are intact and functioning. So much so that jokingly (or maybe not?) the company is considering whether to resell these Playdates in the form of a limited edition, the Hot Playdates. “Hot”, why is it a hot commodity?
From the additional details offered by Panic on The idea we have formed is that the thieves of the aforementioned shipment simply stole the goods hoping for a great stroke of luck, without knowing precisely the contents of the load, only to then find themselves with devices, certainly of great value, but certainly very difficult to resell due to the peculiarities of Playdate and its high price ($199), which make it a portable console designed for a very niche audience, as also explained in our review.
