Traffic departments have begun implementing minimum speed violations on the first and second lanes of highways, in a step aimed at achieving traffic flow and reducing traffic accidents that may occur due to driving at slow speeds.
Drivers confirmed to Emirates Today that some drivers driving their vehicles at slow speeds, especially on highways, is one of the causes of traffic accidents, as it leads to sudden forced overtaking and collisions with other vehicles, in addition to obstructing traffic.
Drivers monitored some vehicles traveling at speeds of less than 100 kilometers per hour, while the road speed reached 140 kilometers per hour, considering that such behavior threatens the safety of road users who are surprised by slow vehicles and try to avoid them by moving to other lanes.
A poll conducted by “Emirates Today” through its official account on the “X” platform showed that most drivers support implementing a “minimum” speed limit for vehicles on highways, as 79% of those polled expressed their support for implementing this measure, while 21% of them refused to implement it. .
Some of them called for tightening the penalty and traffic control measures against those who do not adhere to the minimum speed on the roads, especially the highways, and implementing awareness campaigns about the danger of slow speeds and their cause of traffic obstruction and traffic accidents.
For its part, Abu Dhabi Police called on drivers to adhere to the right lane when driving at slow speeds, as it causes obstruction to traffic, confusion for drivers, and the occurrence of serious accidents, stressing the need to be careful about safe driving, and not to overtake or overtake vehicles driving in front of them from the right, due to… Overtaking from the right poses a great danger, causes serious traffic accidents, and may result in deaths and serious injuries.
She stressed the importance of paying attention, not changing lanes to other lanes except after ensuring that the road is clear, moving if there is a sufficient distance between them and other vehicles, and committing to using signals when moving to other lanes.
It warned of the dangers of harassing vehicles advancing on the “overtaking lane,” sticking to them, and using high beams and horns, which causes serious confusion for drivers and diverts focus on the roads, leading to painful traffic accidents, as a result of road users’ lack of appreciation and failure to leave the vehicle. Last year, the Abu Dhabi Police General Command began actively enforcing violations of the “minimum speed” system on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road in both directions on the two fast lanes, stressing that the goal of activating the minimum speed is to enhance the safety of drivers, force slow vehicles to drive in the right lanes, and give way The road is always reserved for vehicles with priority coming from behind or from the left.
