Authorities suspect deaths were caused by heatstroke; New Delhi, the country’s capital, reached 52.9 °C, a record temperature record
An extreme heat wave in India resulted in the deaths of at least 33 people this Friday (May 31, 2024), including election officials who were on duty. Local authorities suspect that the deaths were caused by heatstroke. The information is from Reuters.
New Delhi, the capital of India, reached 52.9 ºC – representing the highest temperature in the city. The heat wave is expected to continue until Saturday (June 3).
In Bihar, in eastern India, 14 died, including 10 people involved in organizing the national elections. In the country’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, 9 election workers also died.
In Odisha, 10 deaths were reported, prompting the local government to advise against outdoor activities from 11am to 3pm (local time).
The deaths occur during the country’s electoral period, when many election workers have to remain on duty all day and, often, outdoors.
