He also said he defended amnesty for those arrested on January 8th.
Along with the parliamentarians, there were representatives of the January 8th defendants and lawyers Ezequiel Silveira and Carolina Siebra, who represents some of the people arrested during the invasion of the headquarters of the three powers.
Support for January 8 prisoners
During the hearing, Brazilian deputies stated that the January 8th defendants are political prisoners. “They are not criminals. On the contrary: they are people who have opinions against crime, particularly in politics, and who today are condemned to spend years in prison”, said Marcel Van Hattem in an interview with the Argentine broadcaster La Ciudad Radio.
According to the parliamentarian from Rio Grande do Sul, the objective of the trip is to ask the government and deputies for help “so that these people can live in freedom”.
After the event, Van Hattem also spoke to the Space Liberdade page. In the interview, he stated that “The repercussion is immediate because there are deputies who came to this committee and who did not know the reality, and who are now willing to hold new meetings in other committees of the National Congress”, he stated.
The deputy from Rio Grande do Sul also stated that he expected the support of the Argentine president. “Today the president is Javier Milei, who has total affinity with freedom of expression, against censorship, and for this reason we will really need the Presidency’s help here,” he said.
Lawyer Ezequiel Silveira stated that the objective of the trip was to seek international support to pressure the Brazilian authorities. “We were able to complete another stage of these international missions that we are carrying out, bringing the reality of what is happening in Brazil so that the world knows what is happening. This generates international pressure so that the situation in Brazil is modified as much as possible. before,” he said after the event, on his Instagram page.
Going to the United States bore fruit
In March of this year, a delegation of Brazilian conservative parliamentarians and activists went to the United States Congress to denounce the censorship of opposition figures and the excessively harsh treatment given to the January 8 defendants.
The visit bore fruit: two months later, the Human Rights commission called a public hearing to address the situation in Brazil. Among those invited to speak was businessman Paulo Figueiredo Filho, who was being investigated for allegedly participating in undemocratic acts.
