The data on smoking “confirm that the phenomenon, in our country, shows no signs of stopping or reducing. We continue to be a country in which approximately one in 4 Italians is a smoker. This is a trend that has had a declining phase over the years, but it is really difficult to remove this propensity in those who have this ingrained habit. It’s really complicated” which is why we need “data and clear information on the available alternatives”. Thus Livio Gigliuto, executive president of the Piepoli Institute, comments to Adnkronos Salute on the results released by the Higher Institute of Health on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.
A recent survey “that we carried out in collaboration with Adiconsum, on smoking consumers who had made the transition from traditional to alternative products – in particular from cigarettes to heated tobacco – interesting aspects emerged. The first – Gigliuto lists – is that these consumers, who have switched to other products, are confused: they have a lot of information in front of them and, often, conflicting with each other. This is why they ask for more clarity, unambiguous information on the products they have approached using. The second piece of data? They ask that research into these products does not stop, that it continues. The third thing they told us is that obviously, possibly, in case it were to be seen
through research that there is some difference between these products and traditional ones” on the health effects, for example, “of regulating their use”. In other words they say “we don’t use the same rules for the traditional product and the innovative product”. Carlo De Masi, president of Adiconsum, also underlines the importance of information and adequate regulations on smoking. “We need educational campaigns – he concludes – to guide young people in a different way”, but we must also “make access to smoking more restrictive for minors. There are no brakes or education on the use of smoking products. In these aspects, as emerges from the recent survey conducted by Piepoli in collaboration with Adiconsum, the role of the institutions is central. In particular, around 70% of those interviewed believe that the State and health institutions should encourage smokers who do not intend to quit to consider switching to alternative products and inform more about their characteristics.
