The CPF number (Individual Taxpayer Registry) is a unique identification document for each Brazilian citizen. However, one of the eleven digits in the registration indicates the region in which the person lives or lived at the time of registration.
The Federal Revenue Service, responsible for registration, is divided into ten tax regions for administrative purposes. The ninth digit of the CPF corresponds to the tax region of the address entered when the individual first registered.
For example, if the registered address is in the state of São Paulo (8th Fiscal Region), the ninth digit will be 8: XXX.XXX.XX8 – XX
Check below the correspondence between the numbers and their respective regions:
1 – Federal District, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Tocantins;
2 – Pará, Amazonas, Acre, Amapá, Rondônia and Roraima;
3 – Ceará, Maranhão and Piauí;
4 – Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Alagoas;
5 – Bahia and Sergipe;
6 – Minas Gerais;
7 – Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo;
8 – São Paulo;
9 – Paraná and Santa Catarina;
0 – Rio Grande do Sul.
What is the CPF for?
The CPF is a registry managed by the Federal Revenue Service, which stores registration information for all registered citizens. There is no minimum age for registration and Brazilians or foreigners, residing in Brazil or abroad, are permitted to register.
Citizens can obtain their CPF, correct it or even consult it for free through email supportin one of the more than 700 Federal Revenue Virtual Service Points (PAV) located in partner entities, such as city halls, or, in a Revenue service unit.
