The outlook for the Corpus Christi weekend is bleak. After the storms in May, Germany is once again facing a wet weekend. Concerns about flooding are growing.
Update from May 29, 3:05 p.m.: The German Weather Service (DWD) is warning of rising rivers, particularly in Baden-Württemberg. In the northern parts of the Alb and Allgäu in particular, up to 100 litres of rain per square metre could fall. And in the eastern half of Baden-Württemberg, between 50 and 80 litres per square metre could fall across the board.
The expected rainfall could endanger smaller streams. These then flow into larger rivers. “The Neckar is already full,” warned a spokesman on Wednesday. Further rain is forecast for the weekend, which will make the situation worse. According to initial forecasts, the extensive weather situation will begin on Friday afternoon, with Saturday being the main focus.
“Severe weather and continuous rain” threatens the south and southeast of Germany
Update from May 29, 1:10 p.m.: According to the German Weather Service (DWD), a “severe weather situation with continuous rain” is expected on Friday (30 May). According to the current warning report, heavy rainfall is expected in large parts of southern Germany and the eastern centre of the country until Sunday (2 June): In many areas, 70 to 120, locally around 150 litres of rain per square metre could be expected.
“Flooding and inundation are inevitable,” DWD meteorologist Marcel Schmid told the dpa news agency on Wednesday. Only in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland are significantly less rainfall expected. The DWD will not issue any specific warnings until Thursday evening at the earliest.

Danger of flooding in Germany still on the first weekend of June
Severe storms caused flooding in Germany in mid-May. Saarland and parts of Rhineland-Palatinate in particular were under water. The west will probably get off lightly this weekend in June, however. The heaviest rain is expected to fall in the east and south.
Current forecasts indicate extreme rain in Saxony and Bavaria in particular, with up to 160 litres of rain per hour, as wetter.net warns. But Thuringia and Hesse should also prepare for plenty of rain. Isolated thunderstorms could occur.
According to the current forecast, the rain will increase almost everywhere in Germany from Friday evening and will continue into the night of Saturday (June 1st). There is a particular risk of flooding for the Danube and Elbe. However, more precise forecasts can usually only be made 48 hours in advance. Meteorologist Jan Schenk from The Weather Channel However, we expect weather conditions similar to those of 2021.
Wet holiday: Rain is coming from Thursday – and will stay for now
From Corpus Christi (May 30th) the weather will get worse, as the German Weather Service (DWD) reports. Thunderstorms and strong gusts of wind could occur. Nevertheless, it will probably remain predominantly warm, with temperatures in the east rising to 22 degrees.
The wind will probably die down on Friday, but the persistent rain will also bring down the temperatures. According to the DWD, temperatures will drop to as low as 7 degrees on Friday night. In the east it will be 18 degrees on Friday, and a maximum of 17 in the south. It will be a little warmer on Saturday, with a mix of sun and clouds. If it rains, it will be heavy, with a high risk of flooding, according to the DWD forecast.
Is this year’s summer completely useless? There are no long-term forecasts from meteorological weather models yet – but experts fear a “hellish summer”.
