According to the Minister of Health, the estimate is that cases of the disease will continue to rise; five deaths have been confirmed since the start of the rains
The Minister of Health, Nisia Trindadesaid this Wednesday (May 29, 2024) that the number of leptospirosis cases in Rio Grande do Sul could be 4 times higher than that recorded in 2023. He gave the statement to journalists.
In 2023, 477 cases of leptospirosis and 25 deaths from the disease were recorded in the State, according to data from the Ministry of Health. In 2024, there have been 124 confirmed cases and 5 deaths since May, the period in which the floods began.
On Monday (May 27th), the SES-RS (Rio Grande do Sul Health Department) reported that it is still investigating 922 possible cases of infection and another 9 deaths. In total, 1,588 cases of the disease were reported.
The city with the most reported cases is Porto Alegre, with 685 total cases. The number is almost 9 times higher than the notifications in Canoas, which occupies 2nd place on the list with 76 cases.
DIAGNOSIS AND SYMPTOMS
According to SES, the disease can take up to 30 days to develop in the human body. Symptoms begin to be felt by the patient from the 7th to the 14th day after exposure. Anyone who has had contact with potentially contaminated water and presents:
- fever;
- headache;
- body pain (especially in the calves);
- vomiting; It is
- yellowish skin (in more severe cases).
The Minister of Health recommended that the disease diagnosis should not be confirmed until treatment begins.
“We have tests, the central laboratory is processing this material. This is important so that we know the reality, but treatment takes place from the moment the symptoms occur”he stated.
