The International Cycling Union (UCI) ended the mystery this Wednesday in the case of the Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez and imposed a 4-year sanction on him, after the Anti-Doping Court declared him guilty of doping for the use of menotropina substance prohibited in the regulations.

The UCI had imposed a provisional suspension on the Colombian after being associated in the Ilex operation (a doping plot) carried out by the Spanish Civil Guard against the Spanish doctor of Astana, Marcos Maynar. After almost a year, the official sanction from the governing body of world cycling came out.

“The Court has found guilty Miguel Angel Lopez of an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) for use and possession of a prohibited substance (Menotropin), concomitantly with the 2022 Giro d’Italia, and has imposed a four-year suspension on the rider,” the UCI said.
A few weeks ago, the Investigative Court 3 of Cáceres, in Extremadura (Spain) removed him from the investigation and removed the civil charges for the doping plot, considering that the evidence provided by the Civil Guard was not enough to declare him guilty.

The judge who was handling the case ruled out that the runner had anything to do with that crime and separated him from the civil investigation, but not a sports one, since it is a totally different case.
The UCI explained in its statement thatl Anti-Doping Court found the Colombian cyclist guilty for the case of doping concomitant with the Giro d’Italia 2022which was born from said operation in Spain.
“In accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the UCI Anti-Doping Regulations, the suspension period began on July 25, 2023 and will remain in force until July 24, 2027. We recall that the disciplinary procedure was initiated following an investigation carried out carried out by the International Testing Agency (ITA) based on evidence obtained from the Spanish Civil Guard and the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency (CELAD) in the so-called Operation “llex” on Dr. Marcos Maynar. “The UCI appreciates this valuable collaboration.”
