The weekend for the RedBull Racing team at the Monaco Grand Prix was calamitous: The Dutchman Max Verstappen, the leader of the Formula 1 world championship, was far from the podium, and his teammate, the Mexican Checo Pérez, crashed when the race was just beginning.
The exchange of statements of the pilots after the crash
“The accident seemed unnecessary to me, there was nowhere to go. Two cars on par in Monaco is always very complicated, especially in the first corner. We had to take things calmly,” declared the Mexican after the crash, who seemed surprised that the crash had not been investigated.
For his part, Magnussen blamed Pérez for what happened. “I had the front axle aligned with Checo’s rear wheels, on the way to the Curva del Casino, and he didn’t leave me any room on the outside. I expected him to leave me a car width, because I didn’t appear out of nowhere: my car was already there at the exit of Turn 1. I’m surprised he ended up against the guardrail, because he had a gap to his left. I don’t know, he would count on me to disappear,” noted the Dane.
This is the amount that RedBull will have to spend to fix Checo Pérez’s car
“There was a lot of damage, it was very dangerous. “I am disappointed, because the accident was important and my car is completely destroyed,” Checo insisted.
Austrian Helmut Marko, RedBull’s advisor, took stock of what the accident will cost RedBull, for which he also blamed Magnussen.
“It is another accident in which Magnussen was involved. Thank God it ended without injuries, but the situation was critical. “I was surprised how quickly they put the incident behind them,” the Austrian insisted.
Magnussen, who has already been involved in several incidents this season, is about to complete the penalty points to miss a grand prix due to suspension: he has ten in eight races.
