He wants to make one last trip with his “Babs”: A terminally ill dog owner from the USA wants to know that his animal companion is well cared for.
Plainville – He is terminally ill, but his concern is not for himself, but for his most loyal companion. The dog Babs and 65-year-old David Fine from the US state of Massachusetts have been inseparable for years. The man from Plainville has no family who could look after Babs after his death, so he desperately turned to his fellow people via Facebook. He wants Babs to be well looked after.
Owner worries about dog Babs: He dies of lung cancer
The dog owner dies of lung cancer. According to his doctors, he has six months to live. In August last year, Fine was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Various media outlets are reporting on this, such as WJARDespite his diagnosis, Fine remains positive and says: “I’m fine. I’ve come to terms with it, it is what it is.” He refuses chemotherapy. His thoughts are now only with his dog. In Munich too there are more and more dog parentsas new figures show.
Fine told the medium that Babs came into his life a decade ago. She had been abandoned twice before a friend took her in and asked Fine to keep her in his garage. The two became inseparable after that. According to Fine, the Shar-Pei-Boxer mix was “the most important thing to him at this point.”
His post on the social network caused quite a stir. According to a new Facebook update, Fine is said to be “overwhelmed” by the sympathy and has already received over 1,000 emails.
Former carpenter had pets before and struggled to lose them
Fine has had animal companions before and struggles every time they die. That’s why he hadn’t planned on getting another dog. “I told myself I would never get another pet because it would break my heart to lose her. Thankfully, she will outlive me this time.”
Fine had worked as a carpenter until 2020. Since his retirement, he and his dog have made many trips, for example to the famous Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. This was Fine’s “lifelong dream”. During the trip, he constantly had “a grin on his face.” But the two did not reach their next destination, Yellowstone National Park. Fine became ill.
“I got sick, so sick I couldn’t drive.” In the years before the trip, he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and was treated. A year later, he was suffering from vascular disease in his legs that had caused several arteries to become blocked. Fine was plagued by chest pains.
Owner from Massachusetts: “My fate is sealed, but her fate is not”
After four months the diagnosis came. Since he was determined to find a cure for Babs before his death to find a new homehe reached out to a local veterans program before a Facebook post with his final wish went viral. He spoke of an extremely close bond with the animal. “I would love to find someone like me. It’s like trying to find a home for your child.
He continues: “My fate is sealed, but her fate is not.” He wants to ensure “that she has as many good years as possible for the rest of her life.”
Dog owner from the USA talks about his successor: “No one will be good enough”
A family home is out of the question. Fine has never married and has no children of her own. He has asked other family members to take her in, but they already have other people’s pets. Fine describes Babs as extremely intelligent. She behaves well and has good toilet skills. She also loves sleeping in a human bed, but doesn’t cope well with stairs.
Fine talks about his ideal successor: “I would like to find someone like me, someone who wants a companion.” At the same time, he also admits that “no one will be good enough.” Fine continues: “Every time I imagine her driving away in the back window of a car and saying, ‘What’s going on?’ Where am I going and why aren’t you coming with me?’
The dog dad seems desperate: “I just can’t do it, I can’t, but I have to do it at some point.” But he still has a concrete goal. “Everyone dies, there are things I wanted to do. I still want to see Yellowstone.” Then he can rest in peace, he wants to do it for Babs. “I’m not ready to go yet.” And it looks as if he can still make this dream come true: At a Fundraising campaign Fine has already raised $1,400 for the trip.
