It’s not exactly the epitome of healthy eating. What’s more: it is often pointed out as the main element of bad nutrition. Nevertheless the hamburger – whose World Day is celebrated today, Burger day 2024 – it is one of the most popular dishes in the world and “it has a very bad reputation, which is undeserved. It is not a food to be put on the ‘bad’ list, also because, in reality, there are no good and bad foods at all. It depends on how they fit into the global diet”, explains nutritionist Michele Carruba, director of the Obesity Study and Research Center of the State University of Milan, to Adnkronos Salute.
From a strictly scientific point of view, specifies the specialist, “there is, however, a good and a bad diet. And within the framework of good nutrition there is room for all the ‘ingredients’, but in the appropriate ways. Any food eaten too often and in excessive doses are the enemy of health. The hamburger eaten once in a while is fine“.
As part of the Mediterranean diet“the diet that has, according to the scientific community, a better impact on health – underlines Carruba – red meat is expected but, obviously, no more than once a week. If you choose hamburgers as red meat, which can be fattier than other preparations, then you must take this into account, do not exaggerate with the quantities and limit the intake of other fats. It goes without saying that overdoing it with seasonings and fats is not good, while accompanying the meat with vegetables is the right choice“, concludes the expert, recalling that in healthy eating “above all, variety is needed”.
