According to a report, Russia is using a highly modern guided bomb from Iran for the first time in the Ukraine war. The West is warning Tehran against further military aid.
Moscow – In the war in Ukraine, Russia continues to rely on air strikes against infrastructure, but also civilian objects. In Russian attacks in the border regions of Kharkiv and Sumy, various weapons are used, including an increasing number of guided bombs, which are difficult for Ukrainian air defense to stop.
Most of these bombs come from Russia itself. Putin’s armed forces have also received new, state-of-the-art aerial bombs from Iran, which are now apparently being used in the war.
Russia uses guided bomb and drone from Iran against Ukraine
Last weekend (25/26 May), a Qods Mohadscher-6 drone is said to have crashed in the Russian Kursk Oblast, near the Ukrainian border. This is reported by Julian Röpcke from the Picture on X. A Video on the platform is supposed to show the crashed aircraft including its armament in the form of an Iranian bomb.
The Mohajer-6 has been in use in the Ukraine war for some time. After the purchase of an unknown number of Iranian drones, it is regularly seen over Ukraine. For example, one such drone was seen over the Crimea shot down and captured in the first months of the war near Odessa. However, their armament is now new. According to Röpcke, the Mohajer-6 in Kursk was equipped with the latest Iranian guided bomb, the Qaem-5.
Iran only put the bomb into operation in 2019, Iranian media reportsAccording to Iran, it has an infrared and a laser seeker, among other things, and can hit its target precisely in any weather conditions. The Qaem bomb must be dropped at a height of around 1,200 to 3,000 meters and has a range of 12 to 40 kilometers. The Qaem-5 is 108 centimeters long and has a diameter of 15.8 centimeters. Together with its warhead, it weighs 20 kilograms.
“New level”: Iran and Russia deepen cooperation in armament
Iranian support for Russia in the form of weapons has reached a “new level,” says Röpcke. This operation was intended to involve a drone attack on the Sumy Oblast, but for unknown reasons it crashed in Kursk, reports the Ukrainian Pravda
Russia is constantly attacking Ukraine with Iranian weapons. Putin’s army is relying primarily on Shahed drones from Iran – so much so that Russia wants to build its own drones of this type. Iran will also soon supply ballistic missiles to Russia. According to Western intelligence services, there is an agreement to do this. However, there is still no evidence that such a delivery has taken place. There have been several visits by Russian representatives to Tehran over the course of the war to provide military support.
Weapons in the Ukraine war: West condemns Iran’s support of Russia
The EU has imposed sanctions on Iran because of its “military support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine”. “The European Union strongly condemns any kind of military support from Iran, including the supply of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) (…) and considers this support unacceptable,” Brussels said.
The G7 countries also had an explanation issued: “We are extremely concerned about reports that Iran is considering supplying ballistic missiles and related technology to Russia. We call on Iran not to do so, as it would represent a significant material escalation of its support for Russia’s war in Ukraine,” it said. “If Iran does indeed supply ballistic missiles or related technology to Russia, we are prepared to respond swiftly and in a coordinated manner, including with new and severe measures against Iran.” (Luke Rogalla)
