Sony was very confident about the possible outcomes of Helldivers 2the cooperative shooter from Arrowhead Studios, so much to have doubled the development budgetas well as the time of the same, bringing it to almost eight years in total.
This was revealed by the president and creative director of the studio Johan Pilestedt on the occasion of Nordic Game 2024, who told how Helldivers 2 it should have been ready in three years, but ended up requiring almost eight. Meanwhile the number of developers has grown from 35 to more than 100 people. During the process, the developer and publisher agreed that doubling the budget would be better for the project. In the end the choice paid off, considering that a maximum peak of around 150,000 players was expected, far exceeded by the actual figure of 750,000 players recorded after launch.
Controversial choices
Pilestedt also touched on how the announcement of linking Steam and PSN accounts for the PC version of Helldivers 2 backfired on PlayStation, with the community organizing bombarding the game with negative reviews on Steam, so much so that it has become one of the most criticized on the platform. Fortunately the situation has resolved and now things have improved enormously.
Even if it hasn’t been said explicitly, it is clear that the success of Helldivers 2 will be a harbinger of further developments for the game and the series. We imagine that PlayStation will want to invest further in it, supporting it for years to come. For the rest, remember that Helldivers 2 is available for PC and PS5.
