Marcel Kohler, coach of Al-Ahly of Egypt, expressed his happiness at winning the African Champions League title, after crossing the Tunisian Esperance hurdle with a goal, in the second leg of the final of the tournament that was held at Cairo Stadium. Kohler said that the opponent was a strong opponent, and the match was very difficult, and that Al-Ahly tried hard to create many chances and hit the defensive bloc.
He added that if these opportunities had witnessed some success, the result would have changed completely, especially since Al-Ahly deserved to win, and that everyone has the right to be happy with what was achieved in the Champions League and reaching number 12.
He explained that thinking about the Club World Cup is premature, and that the team has many challenges in the coming period in the local league, and when the time comes to participate in the Club World Cup, we talk about it and think about it.
He said: “In Al-Ahly, we are accustomed to winning championships, and after winning the Champions League, the fans ask us for a new championship, and I also follow the same concept, and I have not and will not be satisfied with the championships, and when I was a player I won many championships, and the same thing happened after I went into training and won.” Championships are a legitimate ambition that helps one succeed.”
He said: “Al-Ahly played the Esperance match with a specific scenario, and we were planning to score an early goal, which is what actually happened. The match was divided into parts, and we started the match correctly, and we played smartly against Esperance, in order to keep our net clean.”
He added: “The result of the first-leg match and the goalless draw made the return match very difficult, which is why we were relatively conservative, and we succeeded in scoring the winning goal, despite the solidity of Esperance’s defences. If there had been a measure of success, the score would have been doubled, and the final matches must be played in a way similar to the way we played the match.” The changes that were made in the second half helped the team control the midfield, and in general, Al-Ahly succeeded in presenting a great match, and the players performed exactly what was required of them.”
He pointed out that the final matches do not have many aesthetics, and sometimes these matches appear as if they are boring, and this is due to the ideas of the coaches, and Al-Ahly went through a long journey in the Champions League, and achieved great successes in the tournament amid difficult circumstances and atmosphere, and the team succeeded in not suffering any defeat, We only conceded one goal during all the matches we played in the Champions League, and this is the characteristic of big teams.
