Terminal replaces Salgado Filho International Airport, closed for an indefinite period
The Canoas Air Base, in Rio Grande do Sul, will begin receiving commercial flights on Monday (May 27, 2024). Per week, 12 Latam flights are authorized, leaving from Guarulhos and Congonhas airports, in the city of São Paulo. From June 1st, there will be 9 GOL flights, from Guarulhos.
The terminal replaces Salgado Filho International Airport, closed for an indefinite period due to flooding caused by heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul.
Boarding and disembarking will be done exclusively at the ParkShopping Canoas Terminal, approximately 3.4 km from the air base. The site will be managed by Fraport, responsible for Porto Alegre airport.
The terminal has space for check-in, baggage drop-off and boarding of travelers. There is also X-ray equipment and metal and explosive detectors for inspecting passengers and hand luggage.
Passengers must present themselves at the terminal 3 hours before the flight. Boarding ends 1h30 before departure. Travel to the air base will be done by bus.
Now, there will be more than 130 flights to access Rio Grande do Sul.

Azul announced that, from June 1st, the company’s air network will have 28 weekly flights to the terminal. The new route will leave from Viracopos airport, in Campinas (SP).
O Ministry of Ports and Airports announced on Monday (May 20) that airlines were permitted to start selling tickets for commercial flights to Canoas.
On May 15, Anac had authorized the operation of civil aviation companies at the military air base in the city of Rio Grande do Sul. The decision was made because Salgado Filho has been closed since the 3rd of the same month.
The Canoas terminal is located in the metropolitan area of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul and had already been released by the FAB (Brazilian Air Force) to transport donations destined for the population affected by the historic floods.
According to the government, the Fraportconcessionaire of Porto Alegre airport, will operate, on an emergency basis, the Canoas base for commercial flights.
