There is severe turbulence during a flight from London to Singapore. Passengers are thrown against the ceiling. One passenger dies and many are injured.
Update from May 21st, 8:36 p.m.: It is still not known whether the German passenger on board the crashed Singapore Airlines plane was also injured. Authorities in Thailand, where the plane had to make an emergency landing after severe turbulence and a medical emergency, revised the number of injured upwards. 71 passengers in hospital after turbulence – seven people in critical condition
According to current status, 71 passengers would be treated in hospitals. Seven people are currently still in critical condition. A man (73) died presumably as a result of a heart attack. It is said that he had previous illnesses. According to authorities, his wife, who was also traveling with him, was injured.
During the meal service, the plane suddenly began to sink sharply, about twenty hours into the journey. A passenger told the British radio show BBC Radio 5 Live that the turbulence had started without much warning. “The next thing I remember is being covered in coffee. During the few seconds that the plane crashed, there was terrible screaming on board,” said the passenger. He also heard a noise that sounded like a dull thud.

However, the airline confirmed the death of a passenger. According to information from the Mirror This is a 73-year-old Brit who apparently suffered a heart attack during the violent turbulence. After almost twenty hours of flight, the plane had drastically lost altitude and within a few minutes the plane had dropped by 6,000 feet (approx. 1,800 meters).
Dozens of photos and videos on social networks testify to the traumatic experiences, although not all of them have been independently verified. Sky News shares a clip on X (formerly Twitter) of what it looked like in the plane after the violent turbulence. Again Mirror continues to write, Singapore Airlines used a 16-year-old Boeing 777 aircraft.

Update from May 21st, 3:07 p.m.: After the fatal aircraft accident involving a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777, there are now the first witness reports about the tragic incident. A 28-year-old student tells opposite Reuters about the minutes in which the plane hit turbulence: “Suddenly the plane began to pitch and shake. So I braced myself for what was going to happen and all of a sudden there was a very dramatic drop so that anyone who was sitting and not wearing a seatbelt was immediately thrown into the ceiling,” Dzafran Azmir told the news agency.
Azmir’s further statements show how violent the impact of the passengers was: “Some people hit their heads on the luggage rack and dented it, they hit the places where the lamps and masks are and broke through them directly,” said he to Reuters.
Meanwhile, the Singaporean news channel reports CNAthat the deceased passenger was probably a 73-year-old British man. The managing director of Suvarnabhumi Airport is said to have confirmed this at a press conference. It is therefore likely that the passenger died as a result of a heart attack. Seven other passengers were critically injured, including a member of the flight crew.

More than 30 people are said to have been injured. There were 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board at the time. Following the tragedy, the plane was diverted to Bangkok and landed at 3:45 p.m. (local time) on Tuesday (May 21). “Singapore Airlines extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” the airline acknowledged.
In Bangkok, the airline is working with authorities to provide “all possible assistance” to the injured, reported BBC.
