A team of experts has carried out one of the discoveries most important of the ancient world in the city of David, Jerusalem. It is a series of objects that coincide with the biblical texts and dating back to 952 BC, during the First Temple.
The Israel Antiquities Authority, in collaboration with the Weizmann Institute of Sciences, has managed to accurately date structures and walls of Jerusalemrevealing intense urban activity during the reigns of the kings of Judah.
Recent studies indicate that the City of David expanded towards the Mount Zion in the 9th century BC., under the reign of Joash. “This finding teaches us that the expansion of Jerusalem is due to population growth and the establishment of political and economic systems,” says Professor Yuval Gadot of Tel Aviv University.
Thanks to this work, “it has been possible to correlate the biblical description of the actual construction activities in Jerusalem with the actual construction activities discovered in the excavations“, highlights the joint statement.
The project, funded by the City of David Foundation, has lasted more than ten years and included excavations and extraction of ancestral objects.
100 radiocarbon samples were taken from four excavation areas, obtained from grape seeds and date stones. These samples were processed in laboratories and precisely dated using a particle accelerator.
Findings under David’s wall
Among the objects found were candles, broken pots, storage jars, and kitchen utensilslocated under David’s wall, which collapsed after a earthquake in the 8th century BC
He discovery of a layer of the wall surprised archaeologists, since Jerusalem continued to exist until the destruction of Babylon 200 years later. Checking biblical scriptures, they found references to an earthquake around the time of the excavated building’s collapse.
This discovery provides tangible evidence that corroborates the biblical narrative and offers valuable insight into the history, culture, and daily life in the ancient kingdom of Judah.
