IRNA: Iranian President’s helicopter crashes due to technical malfunction
The cause of the helicopter crash of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, was the aircraft itself. Details of the incident were provided by the Iranian news agency IRNA.
Raisi died on Sunday (19 May 2024) in a helicopter crash due to a technical fault
The agency clarifies that, in addition to the head of Iran, on board the helicopter were the head of the country’s Foreign Ministry Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the governor of East Azerbaijan Malik Rahmati, the Friday imam of the city of Tabriz Mohammad Ali Ale Hashem, the head of security Raisi, as well as pilots and flight crew. They all died. It is reported that Imam Ale Hashem lived for another hour after the incident, since his body suffered less damage than other participants in the disaster.
The helicopter with Raisi crashed due to bad weather conditions
The Iranian President’s helicopter crashed in East Azerbaijan province on Sunday, May 19, after a meeting between the Iranian leader and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
According to the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Belarus Alireza Sanei, the aircraft made a hard landing due to bad weather conditions. “There was very thick fog, even snow, visibility was minimal. Mountainous, inaccessible terrain,” Sanei noted.
Weather conditions also complicated the search operation, which began after reports of a helicopter crash.
Iran is not aware of the version of the terrorist attack on the helicopter
Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali reported, that he is not aware of the version of the terrorist attack against the helicopter with President Raisi. “I am not aware of this version due to the fact that from yesterday evening until this morning we were discussing with our Russian colleagues what assistance could be provided in the search situation,” the diplomat said.
He added that there is no established version of the crash yet, the investigation is ongoing.
The White House said the United States was not involved in the helicopter crash
NBC News, citing a source in the White House, reported that the United States rejects the version of foreign participation in the plane crash. They called the accusations regarding the indirect involvement of the White House in the incident ridiculous.
The source also stressed that what happened “will not lead to any radical changes” in relations between the two countries.
