In 2024, however, all Apple laptops, except the MacBook Air, will switch to the new chip already present in the iPad Pro
The update of the Mac Studio and Mac Pro to the M4 chip will not happen before the middle of next year, according to one of the most quoted analysts in the Apple world, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Therefore, during 2023, these devices will continue to use M2 chips, unlike other Macs, excluding the MacBook Air (recently updated to M3). In 2024, however, all Apple laptops except the MacBook Air will switch to the M4 chip, recently introduced in the iPad Pro, Gurman reports. This irregular chip refresh cycle leads to a curious situation: the iPad Pro is currently the device with the best single-core performance in Apple’s lineup, and will maintain this distinction for about another year compared to the Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
According to comparisons on Geekbench, the iPad Pro regularly outperforms the M2 Ultra chip by 25 percent in single-core performance. The A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro is also comparable to the M2 Ultra when it comes to single-core CPU power. However, the M2 Ultra remains superior in multi-core use, where it excels. The current Mac Studio and Mac Pro are still great computers that support more RAM, offer more ports and don’t overheat as quickly as the iPad Pro, which was recently updated with the M4.
