Jabaliya – The Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip after the bloody attack by the Palestinian Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023 initially started in the north of the Palestinian region. The area has actually been considered to have been cleared of Hamas for months. But now Israeli soldiers have to return to the north: Hamas is repositioning itself in areas from which the Israeli army has withdrawn. The clashes with Hamas are mainly concentrated in Jabaliya.

Israel apparently still far from victory
According to experts, Israel is still far from a victory over the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza war. “Hamas is present everywhere in the Gaza Strip,” Joost Hiltermann of the International Crisis Group think tank told Dem Wall Street Journal. “Hamas is far from defeated.” The group had switched to guerrilla tactics, which was fueling fears in Israel that it would end up in a “forever war,” the newspaper reported on Thursday night (May 16).
War in Israel: Galant calls for an alternative to Hamas
Israeli Defense Minister Joav Galant had warned the evening before that the lack of an alternative to Hamas rule in Gaza threatened to undermine Israel’s military successes. The US shared Galant’s concern that Israel had no plans for this, a senior US official said Times of Israel. This will enable Hamas to reposition itself in areas cleared by the army and regain control. That was “worrying,” they said.
Israeli tank kills five Israeli soldiers in Gaza
In Jabaliya, the Israeli army reported an incident on Thursday morning in which Israeli soldiers were shot at by their own tank. Five soldiers were killed. Another seven soldiers were injured, three of them seriously. According to the Israeli military’s statement, an Israeli tank mistook the soldiers for enemies and fired twice at the building where the soldiers were staying.
Although the soldiers informed the tank team of their arrival, the tank apparently fired after a gun barrel was spotted protruding from a window. Incidents of friendly fire in the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip are now common. In January it was said that 20 percent of all deaths among Israeli soldiers in Gaza were caused by friendly fire or accidents.
