The public transportation landscape in Mexico City could be on the verge of significant change, as the National Action Party (BREAD) has put a controversial proposal on the table: charge users of the Metro Collective Transportation System (STC) according to the distance or stations they travel.
This initiative, presented in the CDMX Congressproposes the implementation of differential ratessimilar to the model currently in use in Suburban transportation.
What is the PAN proposal to change CDMX Metro rates about?
According to the text of the proposal, the STC would regularly review rates and apply preferential and special schemestaking into account both the specific needs of certain user groups and the length of the journeys.
Who would be saved from the increase in the CDMX Metro?
However, it is highlighted that certain sectors, such as People with visual disabilities or reduced mobility, as well as older adults, would be exempt from this measure..
One of the stated goals of this proposal is to allocate the additional budget generated towards increasing the maintenance of Metro facilities. Federico Doring, local deputy, stressed the importance of this aspect during a statement last week.
