Why is it celebrated on May 15?
The history of Teacher’s Day in Mexico dates back to the National Congress of Primary Instruction held in 1917. At this congress, it was proposed to commemorate teachers with a special date, and the 15 th of May for two reasons:
– It coincided with the anniversary of the birth of Enrique C. Rébsamen, renowned pedagogue and precursor of modern education in Mexico.
– It also coincided with the date on which the Catholic Church celebrates Saint John Baptist de La Salle, universal patron of educators.
In 1918, President Venustiano Carranza signed the official decree establishing May 15 as Teacher’s Day in Mexico.
Will there be classes on May 15?
According to the school calendar of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP)May 15 is considered as “suspension of teaching duties” for basic education. This means that there will be no classes for students or teachers in schools at this educational level.
What other days in May are there no classes?
In addition to the well-deserved rest for Teacher’s Day, the school calendar of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) marks another day off for basic education students: Friday, May 31. The reason? The meeting will be held School Technical Council (CTE).
The CTE is a space where teachers from each school meet to analyze the group’s academic progress, evaluate study plans and programs, as well as discuss improvement strategies for student learning.
In these meetings, teachers also share experiences, propose solutions to common problems and work as a team to strengthen the educational quality of the school.
