Scientists in the United States for the first time since 2003 announced the maximum level of a magnetic storm
For the first time since 2003, American scientists have increased to the maximum the estimate of the strength of the geomagnetic storm that reached the Earth. This is reported by the US Meteorological Service (NWS).
Extreme conditions at the G5 level reached Earth at 6:54 pm Eastern Time (01:54 Moscow time)
The geomagnetic storm is likely to persist through this weekend. Moreover, the last time the assessment of a geomagnetic storm reached such high values was in 2003.
The day before, May 10, the Russian Institute of Applied Physics increased the strength level of the magnetic storm to a very strong level – G4. The last time such a storm was recorded was March 24, 2024.
Earlier on the same day, a powerful magnetic storm of level G3 was recorded on Earth. As Sergei Bogachev, head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said, auroras may appear in the skies over St. Petersburg and Moscow.
The specialist also predicted that the magnetic storm will reach its peak on the afternoon of May 11.
Scientists have warned of the risks of widespread problems with the power grid and satellite malfunctions
The power of magnetic storms is assessed by scientists on a five-point scale. Thus, storms of levels G1 and G2 are weak and have almost no effect on the operation of electrical appliances.
Related materials:
At the same time, G3 level storms are considered strong; they already directly affect energy systems and can cause interruptions in satellite navigation and radio communications. Magnetic storm level G4 means possible large-scale problems with the power grid.
The maximum level is G5; such storms almost always cause large-scale problems with the power grid and serious problems with satellites and radio communications.
Since the beginning of May, more than 20 powerful flares have been recorded on the Sun
On May 8th, scientists recorded 15 powerful solar flares on May 8th. Two of them turned out to be of the highest class X.
On the same day, flares of the highest class X1.0 and X1.0/1B occurred. Some of them were accompanied by disruption of HF radio communications and coronal mass ejection. A total of 15 class M and X outbreaks were recorded.
In addition, on May 5, experts also managed to record seven powerful solar flares, two of which were classified as class X.
Related materials:
Before this, a Class X flare recorded May 3. Because of it, a G3 class magnetic storm began on Earth, rated as “strong” on the monitoring scale.
Recall that solar flares are divided into different categories depending on their power. There are currently five classes: A, B, C, M and X.
Scientists have mixed opinions about the impact of magnetic storms on humans
In March, Farit Zakiryanov, a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences from Ufa, denied the influence of magnetic storms on humans. According to him, this phenomenon does not have a serious impact on living organisms, since the change in the magnitude of the magnetic field is insignificant.
Zakiryanov also clarified that scientific arguments are not always present in studies that report the negative impact of magnetic storms on humans. At the same time, according to the expert, magnetic storms may pose a certain risk to the health of pilots at high altitudes and astronauts due to radiation exposure, and not due to the magnetic field.
In turn, endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova said that magnetic storms can often cause headaches, surges in blood pressure, irritability and exacerbation of symptoms of chronic diseases.
The doctor advised me to take all the medications prescribed by my doctor for regular use at this time.
Sedatives, including herbal teas, are very helpful. Aromatherapy (lavender, rose, lemon, mint, etc.), relaxing massage, leisurely yoga and meditation helps many people.
Meteorologist Tatyana Pozdnyakova also confirmed that magnetic storms can affect people’s well-being due to the fluid in living organisms. According to her, health may worsen before, during and after a magnetic storm.
