Patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) residing in Reggio Calabria above all lack territorial support, especially with regards to pneumological and palliative management. To address this problem, the Italian Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association (AISLA) and the Provincial Health Authority (ASP) of Reggio Calabria have started today an innovative training course that focuses precisely on the needs of these patients. The professionals involved will thus have the opportunity to delve deeper into the disciplinary aspects linked to the different phases of the disease from highly qualified teachers. The final objective is to improve the care provided to patients with ALS in the province of Reggio Calabria.
The training course of Aisla and Asp Reggio Calabria on the Pdta Sla and law 219 of 2017 – born from the acknowledgment with Legislative Decree no. 664 of 3 July 2023 of the inter-company Pdta for neurological diseases with neuromuscular involvement (Mninm) between the Asp of Reggio Calabria and the Gom BianchiMelacrino-Morelli – is aimed at surgeons, speech therapists, psychologists, nurses, physiotherapists, rehabilitation technicians and experts in Caadm aids of the Asp reggina. The training course will cover topics related to the management of the symptoms and complications of ALS, such as sialorrhea, spasms, dysphagia and respiratory failure, but also the correct use of medical devices and assistive technologies. The psychological and emotional aspects linked to the disease will also be addressed, in order to provide adequate support to patients and their families. A module will therefore be dedicated to law 219/2011 and shared care planning, which guarantees self-determination on the treatment options available and full respect for one’s rights and the dignity of the sick person. The training proposal – the note details – involves constant accompaniment lasting 3 years, with tutoring carried out on local teams through theoretical and practical tools, even remotely.
