“A large-scale ground attack in Rafah will lead to an unimaginable humanitarian catastrophe and halt our efforts to support people as famine approaches,” Guterres said during a visit to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
He added: “We are actively working with all parties concerned to resume the entry of life-saving supplies – including much-needed fuel – through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings,” reiterating his call for a ceasefire.
Agence France-Presse journalists witnessed artillery strikes on Rafah, after US President Joe Biden pledged in an interview to stop delivering artillery shells and other weapons to Israel if it launched a large-scale attack on the city.
But despite international opposition, Israeli forces entered the eastern sector of Rafah on Tuesday, saying they were pursuing Hamas fighters and Palestinian factions.
