Sarah Bondpresident of Xbox, spoke during the Bloomberg Technology Summit reasons behind the closing of Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austinwithout however providing details but simply a concept, that of the long-term health of the company.
“Earlier in the week, Xbox announced it was closing four studios,” asked reporter Dina Bass. “I know you’re not in charge of Xbox Game Studios, but how we players should interpret this move in light of Microsoft’s commitment to developing innovative and exclusive titles?”
“It’s always extraordinarily difficult to make decisions like this,” Bond said. “When we observe these trends, we feel a deep responsibility to ensure that the games we make, the devices we build, the services we offer are present at all times.”
“Even when the sector is not growing, when it is going through a moment of transition. The news we announced at the beginning of the week are the result of this commitment, to make sure the company is healthy in the long term“.
A perfect PR response?
While Bond didn’t actually shy away from the issue, her words regarding the shutdowns carried out by Microsoft were seen as a perfect PR responsewhich aims not to disappoint shareholders rather than providing concrete elements.
The problem raised by many, especially with regards to the fate of Tango Gameworks, is the fact that a management that closes successful studios is unreliable and from the point of view of the employees does not provide any certaintyeven if we have just worked on a declared successful product like Hi-Fi RUSH.
