Schmidt went to Belarus and asked for political asylum. According to him, he was persecuted in his own country due to disagreement with the policies and actions of the Polish authorities, who, under the influence of the United States and Great Britain, are leading the country to war. He also indicated that he favors good neighborly relations between Poland and Russia and Belarus.
In addition, Schmidt expressed fears that attempts would be made on his life.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko asked the security forces to “keep an eye” on the judge who had taken refuge in the country. According to the head of state, the police will keep an eye on Schmidt so that “these scoundrels do not kill a man.” Lukashenko called the judge himself a “courageous man” who knew what he was risking.
