The numbers of online gaming
Authoritative research suggests that online gaming will be the locomotive of the sector: if, in fact, until last year, online and retail were traveling on parallel tracks in terms of growth and gaming volumes, forecasts for the next few years see digital in greater expansion. According to various research, online gaming is destined to almost double by 2027, both in sports betting and in other gaming segments, while physical gaming will remain stable. In the near future, therefore, we will witness an evolution of the consumer, increasingly digital and multi-channel. In fact, two out of three players say they have tried the online version of their favorite physical game. And those who haven’t done it yet say they want to try it in over half of the cases. Considering the different gaming segments, for the betting vertical – currently around 20% of the market, supported by around 4 million predominantly omnichannel players (almost 1 in 2) – an online channel is expected to grow by 10%. As regards the gaming segment – the remaining share of the market, with around 10 million players today mainly retail (7 out of 10, only 1 out of 8 omnichannel) – research predicts slower growth overall.
According to data collected by the latest Italy report drawn up by Eurispes, 21.3% of Italians try their luck and of these, 54% often do so also on online channels. These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg since online gaming has undergone a rather recent development and therefore has a potential that we will discover in the coming years, it being understood that already today the collection on the electronic network has exceeded that of physical gaming.
The gaming habits of Italians mean that players’ spending online, i.e. collections minus winnings, amounts to 3.8 billion euros according to the latest findings carried out by the Customs and Monopolies Agency. The public gaming sector paid 11.3 billion euros to the Treasury in 2022, confirming itself as one of the most important economic sectors in Italy.
Why are online games so popular?
One of the key factors in the recent success of online gaming is its easy accessibility and the ability to play your favorite games from anywhere and at any time of the day.
