Ssn rejected family doctor promoted. Only 45% of citizens judge the services offered by the National Health Service positively, and only 19% in particular give them a good or excellent rating. The family doctor, however, is rated positively in 70% of cases and 38% give him a good or excellent rating. This is what emerges from the survey conducted by Ipsos on the occasion of World Health Day on 7 April, the second part of which, with unpublished data, was released today by the Federation of General Practitioners (Fimmg).
In particular, appreciation for the NHS is higher in the Central-Northern Regions (from 51 to 53%) and lower in the Central-Southern Italy and Islands regions (from 31 to 40%), higher among young people of Generation Z (up to 27 years of age, 57%), higher for graduates (56%) than those with a high school diploma (42%), higher for those who declare themselves wealthy (61%) compared to those who find themselves in economic difficulty (29%). Much more uniform, however, are the opinions on one’s family doctor, whose appreciation from the southern to the northern regions varies only from 64% to 75% and is confirmed on average at 70% regardless of age, sex, educational qualifications and economic condition.
“The Ipsos survey confirms what has already been found in the past, namely that general practitioners obtain excellent judgments in the vast majority of cases”, comments Silvestro Scotti, national secretary of Fimmg. “Regardless of all the possible geographical and demographic variables, the family doctor remains the reference figure for all citizens, without distinction. This fact is even more important for us after a narrative has been attempted in recent years that portrays us as the black sheep of the national health service, which instead obtains much lower approval overall”.
Scotti (Fimmg), ‘citizens’ judgment on the public health system is worrying’
“This rejection of the NHS by citizens worries us enormously because the sustainability of the system and people’s health depend on the health of the entire health service. Even the citizen’s trust in their doctor – adds Scotti – can be jeopardized if the patient is repeatedly unable to access the second level services that he has indicated are essential to address a health problem, if the healthcare system is not able to provide them. And we cannot allow this to happen because the entire system would collapse”.
“We acknowledge that the Government and Regions – concludes Scotti – are paying attention to the problem but we ask for greater participation in the solutions. Waiting lists, crowding of emergency rooms, shortage of doctors, demotivation of intellectual healthcare professionals with abandonment of the public (or , worse, of the country) are issues that politics cannot resolve only on the basis of official suggestions. We need a moment of frank and loyal discussion with the representatives of healthcare workers, we need an Ssn-day where concrete and lasting solutions are planned. to the problems. As Fimmg we have to transfer to those solutions, as well as contents, the fiduciary support that comes from the recognition of citizens”.
