“Health poverty is a phenomenon that is increasingly worrying, just think that private spending exceeded 40 billion euros in 2022. It means that the National Health Service risks not respecting its main role as a universalistic system, which should be guaranteed by the Constitution, and is an inspiring principle of the 1978 law. Many Italians have to decide whether to shell out money for treatment or give up treatment”. Thus to Adnkronos Salute Don Massimo Angelelli, director of the National Office for Health Pastoral Care of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), at the presentation – today in Rome – of the conference ‘Health poverty in Italy’, scheduled for May 10th in Verona , the first of a series of meetings promoted by the Episcopal Commission for the service of charity and health and by the National Office for Health Pastoral Care of the CEI, with the 11 Federations and National Councils of the health and socio-health professions, approaching the Jubilee of healthcare of 2025.
“We are convinced that there is a need for a restructuring of the National Health Service, not just external makeover operations – underlines Angelelli – We have the opportunity of the Pnrr which must be developed, but we are also convinced that the number of health workers in the field must be increased We don’t just need structures or equipment, but above all professionals.” At the moment “50 thousand nurses are missing, it is an unattractive profession: the rhetoric of the heroes that we have fueled during the Covid period has discouraged many young people from taking up the profession, as well as inadequate economic recognition. In addition, a related theme is the sacrifice required from the profession, seeing the 11 National Federations and Councils of health professions together today and putting the person at the center was not a given and a start”, he concludes.
