Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this Sunday (5) that his country “cannot accept” the end of the war in Gaza as a condition for a ceasefire that would allow the release of Israeli hostages in the Palestinian enclave.
“We are not willing to accept a situation in which Hamas battalions leave their safe havens, regain control of Gaza, rebuild their military infrastructure and once again threaten the citizens of Israel in adjacent communities,” said the Israeli prime minister.
The statement comes amid negotiations in Cairo to reach a truce agreement between Israel and Hamas, where, according to EFE Agency, information suggests that the Palestinian group has requested a definitive end to hostilities as a condition for an agreement.
However, Netanyahu made it clear that he will not accept the Palestinian group’s demands and argued that Israel has been flexible in its proposals.
The prime minister also sent a message to the families of the hostages, who have been requesting for weeks a truce agreement for the release of Israelis detained in Gaza.
“Hamas is the one preventing the release of the kidnapped people,” he said. “We are doing everything we can to free them.”
