The German Social Democratic (SPD) MEP Matthias Ecke, the party’s leading candidate in the Saxony region in the European elections, was “attacked and seriously injured” last night while putting up posters in the state capital, Dresden. The Dpa agency wrote this today, citing the police and the party.
The 41-year-old was hospitalized and “will have to be operated on”, the agency reports, noting that there had been attempts at intimidation, destruction of posters and insults towards militants who put them up.
A few minutes earlier, according to the police, a group of four people had also attacked a 28-year-old Green militant while he was hanging: the attackers hit and kicked him, injuring him. Investigators are following the lead that they are the same attackers as Ecke, reports the Dpa.
