According to Civil Defense, 39 people died and 265 cities, including Porto Alegre, were flooded and suffered damage.
Rio Grande do Sul has been facing a critical situation since last Sunday (April 28, 2024) due to the heavy rains that hit the region. According to the last report card of Civil Defense, released at 6 pm, 39 died in the State. There are still 68 missing.
Still according to the survey, 265 municipalities were affected. Many were flooded. Others had medical care interrupted and bridges, roads and other buildings destroyed.

- Havan store in Lajeado:
The project, located in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, was flooded on Thursday (May 3). Images published on social media show part of the structure underwater. The owner of the company, Luciano Hang, said through social media that he made available on the morning of Thursday (May 2), 2 helicopters to assist Civil Defense “whatever it takes”.
The municipality of Sinimbu had several streets flooded. According to Mayor Sandra Backes (União Brasil), residents were climbing trees and roofs to protect themselves and try to save yourself.
- Avenida Júlio de Castilhos (Porto Alegre):
In the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the situation is similar. The level of the Guaíba river reached 4.58 meters on the afternoon of this Friday (May 3). The governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) he requested the population to leave risk areas.
RAINS IN RIO GRANDE DO SUL
On Wednesday (May 1), the state governor declared a state of public calamity and said that this could be the “Greatest disaster in history” of the region in terms of material losses. The federal government recognized the situation this Thursday (May 2).
Also on Thursday (May 2), the governor of Rio Grande do Sul published a video on his Instagram profile about the leak from the July 14th dam, which collapsed (watch here). He said the effect of the breakup will not cause a “flash flood” over the municipalities, but that the water will rise to the banks of nearby municipalities.
Leite advised the population to look for higher points along the river and leave their homes if they are in areas at risk of flooding.
