F1 towards the 2026 revolution
“We need to look at the relationship between electrical and thermal power, to be sure not to create a Frankenstein monster from a technical point of view“. With these harsh words the Red Bull team principal Chris Horner he expressed himself last year regarding the power units that will debut in 2026. Apparently, the FIA listened to him, because the Briton's fears have almost vanished.
Horner's words
“Obviously it's a bit unprecedented to change the chassis and engine at the same time, and in 2026 we will have a massive change. Of course there are unknown factors, but the FIA worked a lot, collaborating with the teams“, said the Briton. “We made our voices heard on some issues, which were listened to and taken into consideration. I would say that solid progress has been made“.
“We are faced with a blank sheet of paper, it will be fascinating to see how engineers interpret the various regulations: 2026 could be very different“.
Climb in a straight line
Horner's fear, shared by many others within the paddock, was to see drivers forced to downshift in a straight line to recharge the battery, with the active aerodynamics which would have nullified the slipstream effect and the DRS and sent much more cars spin easily.
