The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sanchezannounced this Monday his decision to continue leading the Executive, putting an end to five days of speculation and silence in the face of the personal harassment he claims to have suffered from the opposition.
In a message addressed to the country from the Moncloa palace, Sánchez stated: “I have decided to continue, to continue with even more strength if possible.”
Uncertainty was unleashed last Wednesday when Sanchez announced that he would take a few days to reflect on his resignationdenouncing the “harassment and demolition” of the right and the extreme right towards his family.
This harassment intensified after learning of the opening of a judicial investigation to your wife, Begoña Gómezfor alleged “corruption.”
Sánchez, known for his political coups, canceled his public agenda until Monday, including his participation in rallies during the first weekend of the campaign for the regional elections of May 12 in Catalonia. In his speech, he promised to lead the defense of democracy against opposition attacks.
Sánchez's decision generated relief among the socialists, but provoked harsh criticism from the rest of the political parties. The opposition, led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo of the Popular Party, described the announcement as “embarrassing” and accused Sánchez of mocking the Spanish people.
The investigation against Sánchez's wife, under summary secrecy, was initiated by a complaint from the Manos Médicas association, linked to the extreme right. The prosecution requested the filing of the lawsuit, admitting that it was based solely on press information. The president, in an open letter, repudiated the accusations as part of a strategy of “harassment and demolition” of the right-wing and far-right opposition.
