The RDW announces that the registration certificate is being overhauled! Who, what, where and why?
When people talk about car papers, it is actually more of a proverb these days. It is no longer a paper mess with all kinds of regular hassle. Nowadays, both your driver's license and your registration certificate are simply a card in a so-called credit card format, so you can easily place them in your wallet (or the registration certificate somewhere in the car). Moreover, both certificates also contain a chip that corresponds to the RDW database, so that any further information is available.
Registration certificate is being renewed
Works well, right? Yes. However, the RDW is making a change to the registration certificate, effective from next June. Before we take a look at what will change, you're probably wondering whether your current license plate card can be thrown in the trash. Spoiler: no. This only concerns new registration certificates to be issued from June. Old proofs remain unchanged and valid.
And what does it look like? Well, like that! A radical difference compared to the old registration certificate, but the opposite. In fact, seemingly nothing has changed. Just like banknotes, a license plate card is more than a piece of plastic: it contains all kinds of clever features to ensure that the document can be officially verified. To prevent fraud, of course. The changes are in the things you don't see, unless you want to verify authenticity. This mainly benefits the RDW itself or the police, for example.
Nonsensical information
Something that the RDW will change on the registration certificate that you can see is removing and/or adding specific information. Currently, every receipt for every vehicle contains the same information. In other words: on the license plate card of a passenger car there is a column with the number of parking spaces, followed by (hopefully) 'N/A'. Relevant for a city bus, but not so for a Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The RDW now only prints the data that is relevant to the type of vehicle for which the card is issued.
Another example of specific information is that the specific (tow) weights of a light commercial vehicle are now stated on the registration certificate. Previously, a certificate of conformity was issued for this, another separate document that means you have to fiddle with multiple papers. From June this will simply be on your license plate card.
