The UN rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, asked this Thursday in Cairo to investigate whether the political and military support for Israel by several Western countries in the war in the Gaza Strip can amount to “complicity” with genocide .
Albanese, one of the most critical voices of the Israeli campaign in the Palestinian enclave, called for investigating “to what extent the aid, both political and military, that has been granted to Israel by a number of countries – mainly by the United States – can amount to complicity.
In this sense, she regretted the inability of Western countries to impose sanctions on the Jewish State, which the rapporteur herself recommended be applied before the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7.
For the Italian lawyer, “the impunity granted to Israel is an integral part” of the Israeli response to the attacks by the Islamist group Hamas on October 7, which began a war that has claimed more than 34,000 lives.
The UN rapporteur also regretted that during her visit she was not allowed by the Israeli authorities to access the occupied West Bank or the Gaza Strip to evaluate the situation on the ground and prepare her report with recommendations and steps to take to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population.
Likewise, he vindicated the role of the United Nations in coordinating the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, since – he said – “it is not fair that only Egypt” assumes this role at the Rafah border crossing, which connects the Palestinian enclave with the peninsula of Sinai.
He also indicated that during his meeting with representatives of the member countries of the Arab League he suggested the creation of a peace mission led by this pan-Arab organization, although he asked for unity to take concrete measures.
“October 7 was a threat (to Israel), but it did not justify what Israel has done,” he said.
