Plot
The story takes place in a three-story building located in a bourgeois neighborhood of Rome. Lucio and Sara, parents of little Francesca, live on the first floor. The apartment opposite is inhabited by an elderly couple, Giovanna and Renato, the latter suffering from initial senile dementia.
On the second floor Monica, Beatrice's mother and Giorgio's wife, constantly abroad for work, fights a silent battle against loneliness: she finds herself experiencing her first pregnancy and childbirth totally alone. The woman fears that she could meet the same fate as her mother, hospitalized in a clinic for mental disorders, and she actually begins to have strange visions, to the point that many experiences that she claims to have lived actually seem only the result of her mind.
Dora and Vittorio, both judges, live on the third floor together with their twenty-year-old son, Andrea. One night the boy, while driving while intoxicated, hits and kills a woman. Distraught, he asks his parents to let him avoid prison, but Vittorio thinks that his son should be judged and condemned for what he did.
